Hello! I too am a 1st generation American-born Egyptian who was raised on lots of the dishes you describe. I wonder if you know about Ursah or Orsah, a yummy dessert that uses flour, coconut, molasses, sesame seeds, sugar, boiled oil, charnushka (which we called "habit al baraka [a little blessing]" they are black, smoky seeds known as black caraway, nigella sativa or kalonji) plus a spice blend called Tahweegaht al Ursah. This is the blend I'm trying to identify. I believe it contains turmeric, but I don't know the other ingredients and can't seem to find anyone who knows what I'm talking about!
ReplyDeleteHi! I've never heard of this, sorry. Where in Egypt is your family from? (north? south?) that may help narrow down the origins of this dessert.
